” (AUSTRALIA). SECURITY agencies would be able to secretly track people via their mobile phones and monitor their internet browsing for up to three months without obtaining a warrant under new laws due to go before the Senate this week.

The powers could be used in a range of even relatively minor criminal investigations, not just terrorism cases.

They would allow ASIO and federal and state police forces to demand that phone companies and internet service providers stream information to them in “near real-time” – just a few minutes after calls are made or websites visited. The information would have to be provided for up to 90 days for ASIO investigations, and 45 days if state or federal police are involved.

Justified as a counter-terrorism measure, the legislation has already been passed by government and Labor members of the lower house. But it remains deeply unpopular with legal experts and privacy advocates.

As well as not requiring a warrant signed by a judicial officer, the powers could be used in any criminal investigation into a suspected offence that carries a jail term of three years or more.

The regime applies to all “telecommunications data”, including the time and destination of phone calls made and received, the duration of the calls and the location of the callers……”

“VOIP goes mobile with WiFi hands”

“THERE’S no need to be anchored to your personal computer these days if you want to make free or low-cost voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phone calls.

An increasing number of WiFi VoIP portable handsets have been reaching the market that can make calls directly via the internet – as long as you’re within range of a WiFi network or hotspot.

The latest comes from NetComm, an Australian company that once designed and made pioneering computer modems, but now mostly imports them, along with a lot of other networking and telecommunications gear.

Dubbed the V24W, it’s described as a “stylish wireless portable handset”. The idea is that you can use it in any home or office that has wireless networking set up.

NetComm reckons you can also use it in a WiFi hotspot at an airport, internet cafe, or hotel, although DoubleClick has some doubts about that, because most of those places want to charge you handsomely for using their facilities, which rather negates the aim of using VoIP to make freebie phone calls……”

ipod_touch_001.jpg

Rumours are over, it’s officially here!

ipod_touch_002.jpg

“The new iPod Touch has WiFi (802.11b and g), the same video and playback interface as the iPhone, the same multi-touch interface and the same screen-flipping orientation detector…

Safari and YouTube come installed, along with iCal, a calculator and an address book. That means that the Touch will work with all the new iPhone web-apps popping up.

The Touch is flash based – no hard drive versions available, which must be how it achieves a 22 hour battery life (five for video playback), and measures 8mm thick (0.3 inch)the iPhone has beaten the Zune to the punch once again. Microsoft might have added squirt-ability to the Zune, but it never got around to over-the-air purchasing. The Touch will let you browse and buy music from the iTunes Store, and it will sync back to your Mac or PC next time you connect.

Available worldwide this month in 8GB and 16GB sizes, costing $300 and $400 apiece.”

EDITOR’S NOTE:
I’m sure I’m not the only one who can see it coming but still I want to point a discussion topic for the ones who are not completely involved in our industry, which is mobile communications.

Amongst gadget lovers globally there is a war going on between iPhone and Nokia N95. While iPhone presents its sexy features (‘the brand you want to shag!’), Nokia N95 lovers are pressing from the technology side. No need to go over the sexiness of iPhone and its global launch and below ‘ad’ summarizes N95s’ point of view:

iphonen95.jpg

The point I want to make here is not the devices but the use of wireless communication infrastructure. While N95 expresses the lack of 3G/HSDPA in iPhones, iPod/iPhone is attacking from another angle; Wi-Fi’s!

Will iPod/iPhone Strategy affect 3G/HSDPA usage more than 3G/HSDPA ‘Owners’ expect? Because of iPods and iPhones will Wi-Fi Areas be the place to download mobile content, interact on mobile video level and all that? Well, I’m sure there will be an effect, and we’ll definitely see the first outcomes in US market but for global affects, I think consumers will have the biggest role and we have to wait for mobile infotainment culture to improve a little bit more…

New technologies and branding/marketing mediums must not be handled as rivals for each other or the existing ones. A new tool or medium must be complementary to the experienced ones. The new general we assign with the new role must be a team member to win our war in communication business.

As a consumer, I think I need a Nokia N95 and an iPod Touch, and will appreciate both Wi-Fi’s and 3G/HSDPA!

” A teenager who unlocked his iPhone so it could be used on networks outside the US has traded the gadget for a brand new Nissan 350Z.

The US company he made the trade with, Certicell, a mobile phone repair company, also gave George Hotz, 17, three new locked 8GB Apple iPhones and a paid consulting job, “to recognise him for his hard work over the summer”, Certicell co-founder Terry Daidone said.

In Australia, a new Nissan 350Z sells for more than $60,000, while in the US an 8GB iPhone can be bought for $US599 ($730).

“I leave for college tomorrow, and this has been a great end to a great summer,” Hotz wrote on his blog. He did not respond to emails requesting an interview.

Daidone said he did not plan to sell the device, which is regarded as one of the first completely unlocked iPhones anywhere in the world, but would instead keep it on display in his Kentucky offices and bring it to trade shows to display in the Certicell booth…..”

“Adobe, the company credited with transforming the Web from a dull to a dynamic environment, is pushing to do the same thing for mobile phones.

The San Jose company wants to become a major player in the wireless market by making it easier to use graphics and interactive gadgets, as well as watch Internet videos, on the small screen.“Adobe and our technologies powered the evolution that happened on the Web,” said Adobe mobile executive Gary Kovacs. “The same thing is going to happen on mobile.”…

…While Adobe’s Flash is already offered on some mobile phones, the company wants to overcome these market barriers and make the technology ubiquitous. This year, Adobe expects 270 million Flash-enabled devices to hit the market, and many of those will be mobile phones. That number is expected to reach 1 billion by 2010, Kovacs said….”
